Diet Pill Idea

So I love Food, and Alcohol.

Fine Wine, Beer, Tequila, Scotch, Beef, Lamb, Sushi, Crab, Cheese, Dessert, all of it.

This is a problem for two reasons:

1) My tastes are expensive. With Ann being a student, and with us living in the second most expensive City in the world our 'budget' does not stretch far.

2) My Job has made me lazy, thus fine food and wine tends to make one Fat.

Now, in the past I have come up with my share on money making schemes, and one of my favorites is the 'Lactate 2 Weight Loss' (patent pending).

Here we would induce lactation in women, who could then pump away the calories! Breast milk being about 70 calories and 4g of fat per 100ml. So at a 1,000 ml a day (average...I know right!) that is 700 calories and 40 grams of fat!

Plus this has the added bonus of increased breast size and increased intelligence (unrelated to breast size, but related to the hormone that induces lactation). So Smarter, Thinner and Bigger Breast. I'd be a multi-millionaire in days.

Anyway, some individuals have frowned on this idea, but I have come up with another. Personally I eat/drink because it is Delicious!                           So Idea #2 Invent a pill that blocks taste receptors.  If I cannot taste it, or if it doesn't taste good why would I eat it?

Forget stomach stapling or stomach vacuuming, the latter of which should make the third world riot. If it tastes bad we won't eat it. So we can survive on low calorie shakes or Soylent green. Maybe we could even make those shakes with the surplus breast milk we have ;)

Anyone interesting in partnering on either idea get in touch. I'll need someone to go Yacht shopping with me next month.

Australia is so Camp

Ann and I went camping for the Oz day long weekend.

We wanted to go somewhere new and decided on the Budawang Range in Morton National Park.

A few hours south of Sydney, it looked like a beautiful spot for a long weekend with hikes to the top of 'The Castle' and through the Monolith Valley.
Day 1
We spend the first night about halfway to our destination in a family oriented campground near a beautiful beach which we got to do some night time exploring on.
Need that 'time shift' camera

Sadly, no time to swim or surf as we had an early start the next morning to for our hike into the Budawangs.

Day 2
The hike to our 'base camp'  started easy enough, but clambering around the base of 'the Castle' with full gear in 30 degree heat took its toll. The trail is poorly marked but not too difficult to navigate. The scenery was amazing!
First of the groups we saw at the trail head to arrive at the Camp site due to our speed hiking skills we setup the tent and started drying out some very sweaty hiking gear.

Then down to pump some water, and settle in for the night. Our timing was perfect as the most epic thunder storm I have ever experienced rolled in right when we went to bed. It poured but our tent held up great and we didn't get wet at all (the same cannot be said for our sweaty hiking gear which was still out to dry).

It was probably one of the best stormy camping nights, I have never heard thunder so loud.

Day 3
The rain stopped in the morning but it was still pretty overcast. We had some breakfast and coffee and went off to explore the rather damp Monolith Valley. From this hike we definitely understand why it is call bush walking! The trail was not cleared at all, poor Ann's legs are still pretty badly scratched up.
Monolith Valley

Natural Arch

The Green Room
We came back to camp for lunch just as the skies cleared.
So we figured it was the perfect time to attempt summiting 'The Castle' which we heard from other hikers in the morning was too wet to do earlier.

Clear skies

Tunnel
To get up "the Castle' first you crawl through a tunnel in the mountain and pop out the other side.
The you scramble around the side eventually coming to a few very steep sections that you either have to free climb, or rely on the old ropes left by others.
Little over half way up

We reached what we initially thought was the summit but turned out we were wrong, We stopped for a photo Op anyway.
False Summit
Thinking we were running out of day light, I made the final summit push alone. The final climb up was pretty treacherous with out rope, luckily the one left behind was in good shape, as my initial free climb attempts where not overly successful.
The view from the very large top was amazing, with Nipple mountain, or Pigeon House seen in the distance.
A surprise at the top was that all the pools of water were filled with frogs and frog embryos. How the heck did they get up there?

From the center of the summit is was hard to tell: 1) that you where on a mountain and 2) where the heck you came from and how to get back down.
I found it eventually, met back up with Ann and we made back to camp with light to spare and caught an amazing sunset from base camp.

It rain again overnight and keep drizzling the next morning. We power hiked out, being especially speedy at the end, due to the leeches coming out with all the new water and trying to attack us with every step.

A long drive home with a well deserved thai food feast for dinner and I think we had a very successful Australia Day Long weekend.

Reality is Skiing

Last February (2012) went back to Canada for the first time since moving to OZ.

Reason being that I needed to move a new renter into my condo...However the 'real' reason was to get in some much needed Skiing. We really lucked out on snow, and due to a slight oversight on my route choice at Sunshine I also lucked into a Catskiing spot (Sorry again John).

Castle Mountain had received no new snow for the entire month of January, but as we drove further and further back into the Valley it starting dumping and did not let up all day.

Of course with Cat skiing comes a photographer to capture the memories, which was great because it was an epic day.

Sadly the last day of skiing at Kicking Horse I yet again broke the heel piece of my alpine touring bindings. Which were the skis I was going to bring back to Australia with the plan to ski NZ and JPN. Luckily I had the Liberties as back up so I could do the Lost Pole Line.

Anyway, back the the point of this blog. The Photographer for the catski trip left at lunch to edit the photos, Not that Ben or Mine needed any editing.

After a 20 hour trip back to OZ, I decided in my jet lagged induced state to try and swap housings on my BlackBerry Torch as it had a few scuffs. Frustration lead to some minor bashing, which lead to a now and still currently none functional phone (LCD very very bent).
This is fine as I have been secretly wanting an excuse to buy a Blackberry 9900 to tide me over until BBX (BB10 arrives). One of the cool features I discovered on the 9900 is wikitude, and augmented reality. With it you can see in real time people and places around you, For example, what the person next door just tweeted or how far and in what direction the nearest pub is (not that your ever far from one in Sydney).
There is even an Augmented reality Game, where it plots virtual Aliens though out the city around you, and you have to get to the Aliens before the Monster who is chasing you catches you! Crazy.

Another thought on reality. Remember the days of airbrushing, where photographers and editors had to actually physically paint photos to hide blemishes.
Now with photoshop any loser can make almost anything possible.
From

Now with BlackBerry 10 there is the new TimeShift camera, allowing you to instantly create photos on moments that never really existed. For example in a group photo is someone blinks, you can edit just that person and "shift time" until their eyes were open, keeping everyone else the same and creating the 'perfect photo" no photoshop or airbrushing required.

BlackBerry 10!

So 10 days to go to the Launch of BlackBerry 10, and I have to say I'm pretty excited!
As seen in this image from CrackBerry.com, RIM is
launching both a full touch and a Qwerty Device, with 4 more devices to follow in 2013, all with the new QNX base OS. These new devices and new OS will make or break RIM and I betting on the former.

RIM stock dropped to an all time low in September at $6.10, much lower then the value of the company in Patents and Buildings/Property alone, know as "tangible  book value". Basically, suggesting to me, it was a risk free investment. And I'm glad I jumped onto the Investor train. I believe in BlackBerry 10 (#BB10Believe) and 10 days before launch it looks like the market is starting to believe as well, with the stock currently at $15.71.

One hang up everyone has about smartphones (or superphones) is Apps. Honestly, Apps were more of a Band-aid to make up for mobile phones poor internet performance. I have never needed a App on my desktop, and the Apps I have downloaded for Windows8 have really done nothing for me. BB10 internet browser is currently better then ANY browser, including the one on your desktop. However, to get past this "Apps" hangup BlackBerry has made it as easy as possibly for developers to make, or port, Apps to BlackBerry 10, and as such is launching with 80,000+ apps, this is verses Windows Phone 8 which launched with 8,000!

Now this number tells me there are going to be a lot of Crappy Apps out there. And to ensure this I made my own. That's right, thanks to BlackBerry App Generator my Blog, Tumblr and Flickr will be available as a downloadable App in BlackBerry App world. I was even able to add ads to my App. So potentially, if my Blog had, or develops, a following of more then 5 people (Thanks Mom, Dad, Brenda, Sean and Ann ;) ) I could make some money.

Until then I'll have to stick to making money on RIM stock, which I will likely spend on buying a New BB10 Smart phone.

Home Brew and Chinese Knockoffs

So me mates and I decided to make some beer. I wanted to make some beer because: A) I'm a cheap C-word (Which is actually a fairly acceptable word to use in OZ) and don't like paying $50 plus for a case of beer which lately has been leaving me so congested the morning after that I have to take a antihistamine/sinus pill. B) I miss the ridiculous amount of brewing Ben and I had going on in his basement C) I had a 20% off coupon.

Because I had the 20% off coupon and the 3 of us splitting the cost we decided to make 2 beers, an Asahi and a James Squire Golden Ale, 100L in total. The BeerFactory where we did the brewing is a ways away from the inner west but you get to drink beer while brewing and bottling thus making the trip totally worth it.

Anyway, due to me being a scientific genius and our ability to measure and follow simple instructions like a Boss our beers turned out excellent, in fact the Golden Ale is arguably better then the real thing and at $15 for a case of 24 rather then $50 it is a bargain.  Best of all, after a night of binge drinking I do not wake up congested!

So, sometimes the imitation can be better then the real thing...Case 2: Chinese knockoffs.
I recently purchased some Vibram Fivefingers Bilika LS shoes as I wanted to start barefoot running.
I purchased them on Ebay as shoe prices in Australia are retarded...You would think being closer to China that items would be the same price or cheaper but the Fivefingers here are $230 ($100+ back home). So instead of paying ridiculously inflated shop prices I purchase a set for $40 plus $20 shipping on Ebay.

Turns out they are knockoffs, but telling this is next to impossible. The only reason I can tell they are knockoffs is because the material on the upper is slightly different but otherwise they look identical. Anyway, went for my first run in them and love them so far and at 75% savings I think the knockoffs will work just fine.

Now if only I could get a Decent Sport bike knockoff I'd be set

Internet Borrowing

I Love the Internet!
Why?
Because It allows me to get stuff for free!
Movies, Books, Music, Pictures.

But rather then argue the ethics of internet 'sharing' his post will one of the few that is all my own.

Since thesis writing I've had trouble getting back into training mode. Not Ann thou, shes been a lean mean running machine lately and has really ran (Damn I'm funny) with the barefoot running theory where she is planning on Running the Sydney Marathon in her Five-finger barefoot running shoes.

Before that thou a few days away we are running in the City to Surf 14km (along with 70,000 others!)

So this post is dedicated to our races we have done together.

Race 1 Las Vegas Marathon

I had never run more then 10km before in my life and only recently got into shape (Thanks to Anns inspiration). I decided to run the Las Vegas Marathon with Ann in December 2008.
Ann had fallen ill a few days before the race, which I think was lucky for me as it slower her down enough that we ran together. 42Km was surprisingly easy and we finished with a decent time of 4:23, however the next day was where I paid the price for my lack of training.

Race 2 was the Wasa Lake Olympic Triathlon 2009

This was a training race  for me after my first UCTC Sprint triathlon in preparation for the 1st Annual 1/2 IronMan Calgary. Wasa Lake was a training race for Ann for Great White North 1/2 Ironman, which became her entry into Ironman Canada. We went out to Wasa with Sally and had to borrow my Dads car due to what was likely some sort of car trouble with mine (Damn TurboDodges)

The Wasa Triathlon was awesome for 3 reasons.

1) Before the triathlon while Ann and Sally were on a training ride/swim I went shopping an bought jeans

2) The swim course was marked short making it the best swim ever!

3) Me and Sally got to laugh at all the Newbs

Race 3 1/2 IronMan Calgary 2009

This was my goal race for the year, and Ann's initial goal race until she won her Ironman spot at Great White North. My training had fallen apart before this race due to selling my house and moving. So, rather than aiming for a medal winning finish (ya right), my goal for this race became not drowning in Ghost Lake.
My swim was terrible, it got really wavy near the end, but had a pretty good bike ride (90km) except for the finish where I crashed spectaculary at the transition to the run. Luckily no injuries and I had a pretty good run after that. I was sprinting like crazy at the end trying to catch Ann at the finish (She started a few waves (Ha) ahead of me) but I missed her by a few minutes.

2010 Trail Running
Due to thesis writing and someones MCAT commitments 2010 became the year of the trail run with the goal race of IronLegs 50 Miler.

Race 4 Crazy Legs
Our first race of the year was the Nipika Crazy Legs 25km in the amazing location of Nipika Resort near Radium. We stayed with Byron and Carb loaded (Beer drank) the night before at his cabin in Invermere. The course was super nice and a great temperature. I ate way too many chips at the aid station but it was a great start to the year.

Race 4.5
Our next Big run wasn't a race but worth mentioning because it was  an epic  training run on the Cox hill part of the IronLegs course with Byron. Of course, being Canada, running the foothills/mountains in May can involve finding snow. And did we ever find snow.

Race 5 IronLegs Ultra at 80km trail run

The original plan was for Ann and I to run this race as a relay team of 2. Our sweet nerdy team name was 1.5 Fe[Me]N which stood for 1 and a half IronMen (me being the 1/2). I decided to tackle the course solo (with my longest train run being 40km) and Ann and Brooke joined forces creating team All Brann.

Amazing course with 20,000 ft elevation change. Unfortunately for me I blew out my knee coming down Cox hill (Same hill as  snow photos above) and had to limp/hop/walk the last 25km.
I finished with a respectable 11hr 7min. Would definitely like to tackle another Ultra.

Team All Brann killed it with an impressive 11hr 11min.

Race 6 Goofy Mathathon and a Half

Finally we did this as a fun race and a chance to visit Ann's Mum, the Disney World Marathon and a Half.
Training for this race, like most of the above it seems, was limited due to finishing my thesis and hurting my ankle on a 'Training' run though the Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas.
Ann and Kendra were dedicated enough to do a 30Km + run in -20 Below weather.

Of course the Best part of the Disney Race is Disney after.

Next Sunday is our next race together, the City to Surf then the Sydney Marathon.
Them maybe I'll find some time to actually train properly for something..Like New Zealand IronMan...
but judging by above probably not.
